You do not have to be a professor or a have an insanely high IQ to be able to read with speed. If you have to read a book for class, a long news article, or a lengthy chapter; improving your reading speed will benefit you tremendously.

More people are starting to apply different techniques and most of them are seeing results instantly. Life right now is going in a fast pace and what better way to accommodate this fast life with even faster reading.

Reading faster is not something that is hard to do.

Try applying these techniques:

Use Your Finger

While reading, use your finger to help guide you to read the lines. This will literally force you to read faster. You can also use a 3 x 5 card, or if you are the innovative type you can think of something else.

Concentrate

While reading concentrate on what you are reading. Do not let your mind wander of, because if this happens and you notice it you will jump back a couple of lines to see what you missed. Doing this will just waste you valuable time.

Quiet Environment

There should be absolutely no distraction or noise. This will throw you of.

Skim Without Rereading

Go through the pages or articles as fast as you can, by getting a feel for what each page is about. You can try this technique by looking at chapter titles, subtitles, or paragraphs. Try to do this without rereading.

If you follow the tips you will be well on your way to improving your reading speed. If you time your speed, you will not notice a huge difference, yet. But stay consistent and you will be skimming through the text in no time.

On a bad day do you know that i can read a 500 page book of interest to me in a little less than two days? What about a book with a topic i’m not very familiar with? Well, i guess that will take me longer time to conclude. Now if you want to challenge yourself with a complex reading material, take up a lexicon and read it cover to cover in three days.

I have learned reading in school, yet i find it difficult to comprehend every material that i come across. Is anything wrong with me?

Is that question directed to me? Well maybe, but the answers lies within you. You have all it takes to discover yourself in speed reading. You can actually comprehend whatever you read if you put forth the efforts needed to do this. You are the only one who can accomplish that, i can only show you the ways, strategies, and plans to accomplish this, but i can not possibly help you do those recommendations. Before you speed read there are a lot of questions you will need to give answers to:

How do you give definitions to the materials you read?
What are your goals?
What are your plans?
What are the contents of your goals and plans?
What is your purpose of speed reading?

The truth of the matter is that we all read differently and give different interpretations to a material. Who then is right or wrong? The fact is without good definition of what we read, we are slowed down in reading. Whether you believe me or not the fact is our ability to comprehend any given material gives us the ability to read fast.

Are you aware of the fact that half of the information you read in science and medicine are based on statistical guesses? that means half of what you read are based on unproven facts that may be lies?

What do you understand from the sentence above?

Information in Science and medicine are not always based on pure scientific researches, but on statistical guesses which may not be entirely true. Since there is no real facts to back up the claims. In fact half of this information are a mistake.

What matters is your own ability to comprehend any reading activity before you can confidently say you can speed read. To make it easier for you, pick up a topic of interest, try reading for comprehension and understanding, then check your rate. Practice, and practice and practice even more, you will see that with each practice comes an improvement in both reading and comprehension rate.

Speed reading is a technique that can be used to help you sort through large amounts of information within a short period time. However, the ability to read words quickly is useless if you are not able to to retain the information that you have absorbed.

Speed reading is crucial for those who need to absorb large amounts of information within a short period of time.

The key to being a good speed reader is to know what you’re interested in memorizing from a manuscript before you begin reading it.

For example, many college instructors will give you an idea of what you can expect on your exams. If you notice your history teacher spending a lot of time talking about the French Revolution, it will be important for you to memorize the most important factors related to that event. If your math teacher tells you that a certain equation will be present on an upcoming exam, you will need to memorize everything that is related to that equation. If you have to understand the details of any information you read, it will take you a longer time to go through it. To speed read, you must be able to skim pages and pick out relevant information that is important.

Speed reading is something that is not very useful when you want to read fiction, because entertainment is usually derived from being able to read it slowly. In others words, fictional books are often read for pleasure, and there is no reason for you to speed through it. However, non-fiction books are typically read to obtain information that is of vital use, and the vast majority will have information that is not useful. A good speed reader will be able to read through these books quickly and separate relevant data from data which is irrelevant. However, there are some technical aspects of speed reading that you will need to be familiar with.

When most people read books, they will scan the pages by words or letters. Adults will typically read words in blocks. Often, people may read the same blocks again if they don’t understand something. However a speed reader will read a large number of words in each block. They will focus on a block for a moment, and will then move on to the next. They will not spend a whole lote of time reading blocks that they’ve already read, because this is a waste of time. Someone who is not a good reader will spend lots of time focusing on specific blocks, and it will take them long periods of time to absorb information. Generally, those who are not skilled at reading don’t like to read.

If you are reading this article, it is likely that you are interested in reading, and wish to become better at it. If this is the case, you are a person who values self improvement. By improving your reading skills, you will be able to absorb information faster, and this will allow you to gain more knowledge, which leads to more power. To become a good speed reader, there are a number of techniques you will want to use. First, you will want to practice reading a large number of words in each block. This may be challenging at first, but consistent practice will allow you to do it. Holding the document further away can also assist you in this.

The next step in becoming a good speed reader is to decrease the amount of time you spend looking at the same information. Only crucial information that you need to memorize should be repeated. Again, this will take practice.

The next thing you will want to decrease is the amount of time you spend reading blocks that you’ve already read. Read what is important, and move on to the next block that is important. To memorize the information you absorb by speed reading, you will need to be selective in what you choose to read, and you will need to know the information you’re interested in memorizing.

Your brain is an extremely advanced computer. It will only hold on to information that is placed in long term storage. It doesn’t like to retain large amounts of data that is not important. Because of this, learning how to pick out key points of a document before speed reading through it will allow you to commit to memory things that are actually relevant.

How many times have you looked at your stack of reading materials, and felt overwhelmed? Most of us are bombarded with more and more written information every day- magazines, reports, e-books, newspapers, professional studies- it seems to never stop.

All this information has made becoming a speed-reader a necessity for those who want to stay on top of their profession.

Reading faster and increasing comprehension has become a mandatory time management technique.

Evelyn Wood developed speed-reading, in 1959. Currently, there are a wide variety of classes and techniques available for anyone who wants to master this skill. There are classes, books, audio programs, and computer programs to suit any learning style.

Here are five quick steps you can use right now to increase your reading speed and comprehension:

1.Prepare to read- set aside some time in a distraction-free environment. Find a comfortable spot, and check your focus. If you find you are having a hard time concentrating on what you are reading, close your eyes, and take a couple of deep breaths. If that doesn’t work, and you are still distracted, put off your reading for another time.

2.Overview the material- look at the titles and subtitles. Ask yourself,’ Why am I reading this book? What can I learn from it?’

3.Preview- read the introduction, and the first sentence of each paragraph. Determine what the focus of the piece is, and what the key points are.

4.Read Actively-Underline the main points, mark any areas that are significant to you. Take note of anything that you don’t understand, as well as any topics you find for discussion.

5.Finally, relate what you are reading to what you already know. This will put everything in context for you, and help you remember more of what you read.

Speed-reading is a skill that is built up over time. If you begin to practice it, even for 15 minutes each day, you’ll see results quickly.

A question often asked is why people would want to read faster? Without wishing to be flippant, the answer to this question is essentially two-fold:

(a) because they want to; and

(b) because they need to.

Below we will examine some of the reasons why someone may want to read faster and, more pertinently, why they may need to read faster. To conclude, we’ll also look at some of the practices that can be adopted so that you can actually read faster.

(a) Why you would want to read faster

When we are children, adults try to relay to us that reading is a pleasure that we should take care and time over. We might also be told that in order to fully understand what we are reading, we need to take time over the written word - save we may misconstrue what the author intended. When we reach adolescence, however, we find we’re in for a rude awakening!

Reading is for educational purposes: and if we want to improve our minds, we had better be prepared to do a lot of it!

The need to read lots of information and data is probably the biggest reason why we want to have the skills to read faster. There are simply not enough hours in a day for us to have the luxury of reading everything at a leisurely pace; we must push the frontiers of our reading speed and ever increase this as we get older. To do otherwise means that we have to spend copious amounts of time reading text that could have been utilized in ways (possibly) more enjoyable than reading - such as spending time with the family, or watching television.

(b) Why people need to read faster

The reason why people need to read faster is actually tied-up with the reason why people want to read faster - the sheer amount of information that we need to read these days.

Although sales of novels have fallen year-on-year for over a generation now, the various different mediums we have for reading have increased. Indeed, the Internet alone provides us with a reading medium that we would unlikely be able to complete even if we spend the rest of our life trying to do it!

Moreover, today, more and more of us are required to read very in-depth, complex, reports as part of our day-to-day work: for which we simply do not have the luxury of a couple of days. Work related reading material generally means having to turnaround the reading time as quickly as possible. It is usually for this reason that those of us who have not undertaken a speed reading course by the time we enter the workforce rush out shortly thereafter to do so.

(c) Methods of reading faster

If you find that you are one of those people who would like to be able to read faster, the following are some useful tips that you can adopt in your pursuit of speed reading:

(i) Preparation

A large part of being able to read faster lies on your preparation. Here, before you start to read that thick business report, give it the once over (i.e., skim read it), see how long the report is, try to grasp the main points being conveyed in the report - you can usually do this by looking at the headings, subheadings and index - then take a deep breath and plunge into your speed reading mode. When you adopt some of the other methods listed below, you’ll usually find that knowing a little of what to expect next will greatly enhance your ability to read faster.

(ii) Avoid any distraction

A lot of us can read in rooms with loud music. Some of us can read on busy trains. However, if you want to read anything quickly and accurately, try to approximate how long it will take you to read it, find and appropriate a period in your day when you’ll have such time, then go to a quiet room/place and put up the "do not disturb sign". You’ll find reading in an atmosphere of silence will greatly enhance your ability to read faster. Of course, this is sometimes easier said than done, especially if you have a family with young children. If this applies to you, see if you can postpone reading the material until such time as you can devote 100% of your time to your reading.

(iii) Try to read in daylight hours

Although many of us enjoy reading the odd novel in bed, for the purposes of reading fast, research has shown that we are much more likely (biologically) to read fast during daylight hours.

(iv) Take a break

No one can read continuously for hours on end. Then again, each of us has different thresholds when we have been reading too long. Finding equilibrium between spending too long reading, which will slow down your reading pace, and taking too many breaks from reading, which will likewise slow down your reading pace, is very important. In most cases, the medium time for fast reading is a period of 1 hour reading followed by a 10 to 15 minute break.

(v) Motivation:

Finally, one of the most important aspects of reading fast is being able to motivate yourself to read the material in the first place! If you enjoy reading something, you’ll want to take your time over it. Reading fast, therefore, usually needs to be adopted with reading material we are not overly enthusiastic about reading in the first place! But you should not look at it this way; otherwise your reading speed is going to deteriorate. You need to motivate yourself. Here, prudent practice is to set yourself goals - like you would with anything else in life: "I want to read Chapter 1 in 5 minutes", etc.

So, whatever the reason may be as to why you want or need to read faster, if you utilize some of the above practices in your reading, in no time at all you’ll be reading much faster!
